Chieftains are delighted to announce the signing of netminder Jordan Lawday for the 2023/24 season. The talented 24 year-old was between the posts for his hometown club Basingstoke Bison last season. It was here where he played his junior hockey years before moving to the USA to gain further on-ice education. He returned in 2017/18 to Cardiff, playing for the Fire and also gained valuable experience with the Devils whilst in the Welsh capital.

 

It’s not the first time Lawday has been signed by new head coach Lewis Clifford. He signed on the dotted line for MK Thunder in the 2018/19 season before moving up with Clifford to the Lightning the following year. After the covid lay-off he returned to his native town where he’s played for the past two seasons.

 

Lawday also brings with him some international experience, having helped lead Great Britain to a World Championship (Division 2A) bronze medal in 2018.

 

Chieftain’s coach Lewis Clifford commented “Whilst it’s never nice to see teams being unable to ice teams, we have certainly benefited from the horrible situation in Basingstoke, firstly with Jay and now with Jordan. I have had Jordan on my teams several times in the past and I know what he brings, we are lucky to have snapped him up and have the platform he will provide us with at the back providing stability between the pipes. Once he adjusts to the league, I have no doubt Jordan will be one of the top goalies in the league and provide us with a chance to win every night, I’m looking forward to having him on my team again”.

 

When asked about his move Lawday remarked “I’m extremely excited to get started with Chelmsford, I’ve heard nothing but good things about the team, organisation and great fan base. I’ve played for Cliff before and when I started chatting with him about next season and the aims he has for the team it was a no brainer for me to move leagues and try and help in any way I can to win trophies”.
