Essex Derby Part II

The Chieftains prevail over their A12 rivals!

The Chieftains had only recently faced the Romford Buccaneers, that game ended in an overtime win for the Chieftains with the bragging rights of the Essex Derby heading north on the A12. How would the Chieftains fare in the next installment?

Even before the puck had dropped, it was evident that Romford was very short-benched for this game. As the first period started, the puck was being passed around well by both teams, but neither could mount any meaningful attacks initially. The Chieftains started to gain control, and the shots on the Romford net steadily increased. At 4:27, assisted by Cameron Bartlett, Grant Bartlett scored a superb goal to put the Chieftains ahead, it was 1-0. The Chieftains continued to push, but the Romford defence and netminder were like a wall, the Chieftains just couldn’t break through. The first period ended 1-0. Lawday only faced 3 shots, but Romford had faced 15.

The second period saw Romford come on the attack as they attempted to get an equaliser, but the Chieftains defence was able to quash any meaningful plays and turn them into counterattacks. At 25:18, assisted by Dylan Dix, Cameron Bartlett extended the Chieftains lead even further with a great goal to make it 2-0. It didn’t take long for Romford to come back. At 27:13, Shay Woolmore scored with a well-placed shot against Jordan Lawday, it was now 2-1. Romford was not going to be a simple pushover. The action was end-to-end once more, the Chieftains were passing the puck around well, but Romford’s defence was still holding strong. The attacks continued from the Chieftains, and eventually, at 32:20, assisted by Mikey Power and Hallden Barnes-Garner, Sasha Maltsev scored with a great finish to make it 3-1. The home fans could breathe a little easier! As the shots continued to rain down on the Romford net, it felt just a matter of time until the Chieftains scored again. At 35:57, Cameron Bartlett scored his second goal, he was assisted by Grant Bartlett and Alan Lack. The score was now 4-1, and this is how the second period ended, Lawday faced 5 shots, and Romford had faced 18.

The puck dropped for the third period, and considering Romford was short benched, their players certainly weren’t showing any signs of tiring. The Chieftains continued to mount various attacks on Romford, but Romford continued to defend heavily, and their netminder was making superb saves to keep the Chieftains at bay. As the period played out, the Romford players were becoming more frustrated, and penalties from both teams started to creep in. Both teams were successfully killing off each other’s power plays, and at one point, Romford called a timeout. The Chieftains had 2 players in the sinbin, the next few minutes were going to be full on. Romford attacked hard and even pulled their netminder at one point, and at 58:25, Luca Pascale was able to pull a goal back for Romford, it was now 4-2. Even at this late stage in the game, the penalties continued to come for the Chieftains and Romford, but ultimately, the result wasn’t going to change, and the game finished 4-2. Jordan Lawday faced 4 shots, and Romford faced 15 shots.

Dan Hitchings received Man of the Match for the Chieftains, well done Dan!

This result ensured that the Chieftains had a six-point weekender, and there’s nothing better than that! Well done team!
