Coaches thoughts

Coach Cliff give his thoughts on our first league game against Oxford City Stars

Hi Chieftains fans,

I hope you’re all well and enjoying the start of the hockey season, the summer seemed to go on and on and then all of a sudden, we had a couple of weeks left and hockey was back, pre-season was nice, but there’s nothing quite like playing when points are at stake.  Thanks a lot for filling the rink on Sunday and making a whole load of noise for our first league game, I know the boys can’t wait to get back home in a week and a bit for the next home match.

The game at the weekend was a strange one from my viewpoint, we came out in the first period like we had been shot out of a cannon, we were executing in all the areas we need to in order to be successful, and during those 20 minutes Oxford couldn’t live with us.  It was great to pop in some early goals and take the pressure off, however the following 20 minutes was probably the worst we have played so far through the three games we’ve been in, we got sloppy, lost the discipline to the systems we are trying to embed, and subsequently Oxford had way too much of the puck and way too many scoring chances, Jordan bailed us out on more than one occasion and we really had to dig in and refocus.  Having said that, in the third period I was proud of the way the guys held firm and saw the game out.

Just like it’ll take time for me to learn about my players, it will also take time for players to learn systems and new ways of playing, whilst none of my systems are out of this world or any kind of rocket science, a new coach will always bring new ideas and new accountabilities and that takes time to learn, the main positive is the guys are buying in and want to do well, so while we learn together and form as a team, there will be periods where we get away from things a little, however the commitment will always be there to bring it round and get back on track.

This weekend poses us with a rare challenge of being on the road twice, both Romford and Invicta will be ready to go, so it is important we bring our best both nights and are dialled in from minute one on Saturday.

Once again thanks for your support, and thanks for reading.

Cliff.
