Coaches thoughts

Coach Cliff provides his thoughts on last weekends results...

Hi Chieftains Fans,

I hope you’re all doing well and enjoying the October sunshine, it seems strange to be well into the hockey season and it’s still sunny outside but let’s enjoy it while it lasts.

Another week, another mixed bag of results, however way more positives than negatives this week despite us just having what seems to be our customary 2 points from the weekend. Whilst it is nice to keep picking up points every weekend, we are also acutely aware that at the same time we are also throwing away points the next day, everyone seems to be beating everyone at the moment which helps us whilst we aren’t being consistent, but at some point teams will break away and go on long streaks and we need to make sure we are one of those.

We have made massive strides in certain areas of our game, I was delighted with the discipline on the weekend, especially on Sunday where we only took 1 minor penalty all game, this was hurting us earlier in the season and whilst it’s not likely to only take 1 penalty a night all that often, it does show we can be disciplined when we need to and that we are learning as a group.

On Saturday I was delighted with the way we played, in an extremely challenging rink, we went in with a plan and the execution was as close to spot on as it can be, you’re always going to score and concede in a rink like that, but we had total control of about 90% of the game and that’s something to build upon. Sundays game was a tale of 2 halves (or 3 periods,) once again we were disciplined and workmanlike for 2 periods (if a little off the pace) but in the third the energy of the Jets was just too much for us.

Trust me when I say I have given this a lot of thought, whether it’s a fitness issue, personnel issue, tactical issue or something else, we will be exploring all avenues. I strongly believe in this team and what we are doing, but it needs to start being every night not every second night, or every period and not just 2 periods, we now have a run of ‘1 game weekends’ which isn’t ideal when I’m trying to figure out why we keep winning on Saturdays and losing on Sundays, but as I mentioned above, we are looking into everything to try and solve the hiccups we have experienced and try to make the off nights rarer and rarer.

Thanks a lot for reading and your continued support, see you around the rink.

Cliff.
